        He was drinking water in the bar, plus he tells Bowden when he first walks up to him outside Bowden's car that his cigar is his only vice. So he was probably a teetotaler.

          He is Pentecostal and it is my understanding that they don't drink. So much for people who claim that alcohol is the sole or main cause of violence against women.

            He mentioned that he needed one vice (cigars) to remind him he was human. I've been sober for over 20 years and can imagine running into Max at an AA meeting. It is common for people to switch addictions, some turn to gambling, affairs, shopping, food, smoking, work (mine) and Max, along with his tobacco, gave over to the god of vengeance.

              I took it that he was, he had become devoted to health and fitness while in prison.
