The vile mother played very well by Maureen O’Hara was emblematic of Irish Americans forgetting their own roots because they bought into the superiority complex of being white Americans. Her racism against Italians, Sicilians and even Poles is completely disconnected from the Irish experience living under British occupation and how they were looked at with the same disdain, treated like subhumans in their own homeland. I’ve heard Irish Americans going on trips to Ireland express shock that the Irish people have such an affinity for the Palestinians, the reason being Irish Americans wilfully decided to assimilate in with their oppressors.
