There's something about his performance which was most enthralling, similar to Michael Wincott's as Guy of Gisborne, but Rickman stole the show with his portrayal of the Sheriff of Nottingham took a rather brilliant film and elevated it to a point where it is a timeless watch.
Am I the only one who thinks this?

I agree 100 percent. A truly fantastic performance from Alan Rickman, perfect casting.

I agree with you on his performance but underrated is a relative thing. The Sheriff of Nottingham is definitely well considered but I think the issue is that when it comes to AR as a villain a lot of the top lists have his Hans Gruber up there with Hannibal Lector and Darth Vader.

Totally. With a forgettable villain, the film would have really suffered. I think Rickman's eccentric Sheriff is one of the main reasons this film endures so well. I love to watch it today as much or more than I did right after it came out. The supporting cast in general (Freeman, Rickman, Wincott, McShane, Slater, and others) did an excellent job.
