Ummm, LSD anyone? Not that I would know from past experience, lol. At least that was my take on what she took, based on the visual hallucinations it brought on.

It was speed. She wasn't used to such a high dosage of it and it hit her strong.

you people are silly. It was a Hollywood pill. You take it, see weird visuals or whatever the effects/camera/editors come up with, and they make you strung out.
Answer: they were nothing specific, although she was obviously in a meth/speed lab.
          Why, want some?
EDIT: yes, speed can actually make you tired and pass out if you take way too much.

Versed isn't new. It's used as a pre-op medication to relax a patient. Much like valium, but it has a side effect of being an amnesiac (sp?) which keeps the patient from "remembering" what they just went through.

Well, no way was it speed.
I vote for Quaaludes, which were really big in the '70s. Plus the pills looked like Quaaludes. And the effects she experienced matched the drug.

The pills did not remotely resemble the form of Quaalude that was popular back then, but the effects were similar to what one might experience while taking them (even 1). Quaalude pills used to be round and flat and were very large compared to other pills (about as wide as a penny and .25" high, if memory serves). They used to have Rorer 714 (or Lemmon 714) stamped on them, and were scored in half on the other side. There were capsules which were blue and light blue, but they weren't as prevalent - at least not in Boulder, CO. Of all pills available back then, I vote for quaalude because they were possibly the most powerful and fast acting sedative and could decrease motor functions; i.e., give the appearance of being drunk without having liquor on one's breath. They did not cause hallucinations, but maybe that was the cinematographer's way of showing us how things would look slowed down. Or maybe her capsules were laced with a hallucinogen.

The effects seem more consistant with something like LSD (acid) PCP (angel dust) MDA (similar to Ecstacy). At any rate, the visual effects were some of the most accurate attempts at depicting how the drug user sees the world that I've ever seen. The "trails" of passing headlights and tail lights were especially effective.

The pills were Peyote, a halluicigen.

LSD, Quaaludes, peyote whatever the pills were, that trip scene was my favorite scene in the whole movie. I like how it was filmed in a very Roger Cormanesque way with those trails from the passing headlights and tail lights, and Jimi Hendrix's brilliant "All Along the Watchtower" blaring on the soundtrack. Truly cool moment.

peyote pills? although peyote is a mushroom, some think it resembles a "button", which could be mistaken for a pill, but it is not manufactured in a tablet form.

I'd vote not speed, cause you definitely don't nod until you crash WAY later, peyote is cactus rather than mushroom. I'm pretty sure any of the hallucinogens you're usually pretty wired while you're tripping out anyway. Maybe Quaalude's or possibly home-made Rohypnol. she gets it from a chemist (I think, been awhile since I've seen this), so it's likely a cheap knock-off of a downer. There are some (relatively) easy to make compounds close to ecstasy but with more of the trippy (i.e. tracers) and less of the speedy effects.

I thought they were MDA, I took those throughout the rave years of my life and the effect of the visuals she was seeing on the road were EXACTLY what I saw when on it.

and it made sense how she acted when in the phoonebooth, for someone whose tolerance is next to no tolerance the "rush" is so over overwhelming that at times all I could do was lay down and get all droopy like. Practically just an incoherent mess lol.

None of these knock you out. They do the exact opposite.
The effects in the film were pretty light IMO. For a more accurate depiction of tripping on a hallucinogen, check out The Doors.
Whatever she took had a major downer in it, or was simply a downer. I mentioned Quaaludes because you could also see trails on those.

It appeared that the guy was some kind of dope cook, with the gas burners, tubes, etc. My best guess is that it was MDA, similar to Ecstasy. Ecstasty (MDMA) is only one molecule away from crystal meth and is cooked in a similar ways. Ecstasy didn't hit the scene until 1977 (it made it's debut in clubs in Texas), but MDA, which is similar, was around during the 60s (one of the Charles Manson victims had several hits in the glove box of his Porsche). In the scene after Jennifer Jason Leigh takes the pill, she sees visuals and nods off, symptoms of somebody rushing on X.
But this film had many plot holes. I could be wrong. Who knows?

Carbitol I think you mean. That is definitly possible. It most certainly was not an opiate like Methadone, Fentanyl, Dilaudid etc.. as those drugs do not typically give hallucinations or any visual side effects like the characters in the movie were seeing. If it wasnt Carbitol then it was probably some form of LSD, Peyotye etc..
