I read that, when seeking to cast Gaines, all parties were in agreement that they wanted a "Greg Allman type" to play the role. This was discussed to the point that someone finally had the bright idea to call the actual Greg Allman and see if he'd be interested. He was, and the rest is history.

Very interesting, indeed - and a brilliant casting job. Never would've thought it, but Allman did one awesome job in that movie, small as his role was. Gaines was quite intriguing - and menacing as all hell, to boot. I must admit, though, when I first heard about this movie when it premiered at theaters, my very first thought was, "Gregg Allman playing a drug dealer - oh, now,
      there's
      a stretch"

Gregg rules this film!! He's often quiet and when he speaks to Jason Patric: "Somebody told me you were a badass" his voice isn't that menacing, but man, that opening tracking shot where he walks through the bar, taking money out of the safe, and asking a dude at a table if he's paid his bill yet, he is awesome and scary. That guy at the table nearly beep his pants. Gregg needs to be in more films. Anytime you need a white southern drug dealer, call on Gregg. Black leather jacket, black Mercedes. His character was so stylized. I love it.

Hey michhil - I've got a question for you. I knew Lili Fini (Zanuck) in high school so I've followed her career all of these years. I thought "Rush" was a very well directed film (especially for a first-timer) but it's the only feature film Lili ever worked on as a "Director". I've just always been curious if this is one of those films where maybe the DP or one of the other producers might have been handling the "directorial" chores as much as the director herself. Just curious if you have any sense of this. If it really was all Lili, it's a shame she hasn't done more movies from the director's chair.

I worked on this film and Lili was most assuredly in charge of all of the directing duties. It is her film from beginning to end. She was a very strong director with very definate ideas about how this film should be made. As far as my credits go, I was very proud of the finished film. Good experience working with both Richard and Lili.

I totally agree with you!!!!! The whole part when he enters the bar, stuts on back to the office, getting the cash, and walking over to the guy about his tab. It was mine blowing. He NEEDS to be in more movies!!!!! Its funny, last week, I saw a Cher True Hollywood story, and good ole Greg himself was on there talking about their first date together. I can tell you that he has aged tremendously, and I do believe his hair is up to his ears, and gray too. I kept trying to see if he had a ponytail but i could not tell because of camera shot. He has or had beautiful hair in that movie, and i used to love long hair on guys in the early 70's but now prefer it short and styled. Oh my, I must be getting old. Let me ask you a question mpeachhead, my husband and i go round and round about this one. Who killed greg in the movie, I say it was J.J.Leigh, my husband says it was Elliott or Nettle. I tell him he's wrong all the time. Let me know what you think about this question. Maybe I will get some satisfaction when he reads this. Ha. But you are so right!!! A great mind-blowing movie!!!! I can watch it whenever, and its alot. Maybe about 5 times a year. Plz email me with the answer, OK? Thanks

It is pretty much assumed JJL did it to avenge Jim's murder by Gaines.

For what it's worth It was a long time ago & not something I was all that interested in anyway but if memory serves, Greg Allman once dodged some legal trouble over drugs by ratting out persons of his acquaintance &, as such, is maybe not so cool, after all.

I'm well aware of this, and you're right. It was a low point of his career, but in no way does that have any bearing on how cool he looked and acted in Rush.

If you want a good summer beach read, and you like biographies, I'd highly recommend "Midnight Riders" the story of the Allman Brothers Band roughly up to the mid-90's.
Yes, Gregg did cut a deal and turn in his dealers to avoid harder prison time for himself. He also was buying so much pharmaceutical-grade cocaine that the stakes were pretty serious - hard to know what you or I would do in the same spot.

Amen on the Midnight Riders book. Probably one of the better rock biographies I have read in a while.

He informed on one of his best friends who worked for the band, and was responsible for babysitting him. This guy had even saved his life a couple of times when he overdosed on heroin. Part of his job was to carry Greg Allmans drugs around so that Allman couldn't be arrested for possession.
Allman turned him in and testified in court against him in order to save his own ass,and the guy got some serious hard time in Club Fed.
Greg Allman is scum-sucking trash when he's having a good day.
