Clapton was robbed of Oscars!!

I distinctly remember being in first grade and being pissed that Clapton didn't win. I recognized, even at six years old, that he should have won Best Original Song for Tears In Heaven. The song is haunting, powerful, and much more beep meaningful than any MOVIE Disney has EVER done. It's a dirty shame that it couldn't be put in another film and run again.

Totally disagree! First of all, Eric Clapton is not one to make a profit over misfortune. Ever think that maybe the only way to truly express his sorrows of the death of his son, was to do what he does best, write a song about it?!
Clapton said that he did not want to do the score for "Rush" because he was going through a tough time, but then again, he stated that it helped him cope with the incident.
"Rush" is an amazing soundtrack, amazing score by Clapton one worthy of gold. "Tears in Heaven" was never meant to be a hit, it was his heart calling ot to his son, one last time. It became a hit because it's a beautiful song and it touched people.
I will agree with you on Elton John's "Candle in the Wind", tacky as all sin, but this Clapton issue has no reflection to that, whatsoever!

Of course he made money off it, but that's not the point. What I'm saying is, Clapton never set out to make money off his son. He simply expressed his feeling in song, after all the man is a musicianand was probably the best way a musician can cope with such a disaster.
Elton John however, knew that his revised version of "Candle in the Wind" would sell millions, although I think he donated a lot of the profits. But that's someone who set out to grab cash from the general public over a death. Tacky as it was, at least it was with good intentions.
"Tears in Heaven" is a totally different situation here!

Well, I can respect that, and my sympathies to you for your loss.
But yes, I agree with you whole-heartedly on that ridiculous "Candle in the Wind" remake.

Did you see what happened this yr? A crappy rap song won!! Same thing happened 3 yrs ago. How can they let these stupid ass clowns win but not Clapton? The Academy has less credibility than Dan Rather.

I absolutely agree with the OP. Tears in Heaven is a beautiful song and Clapton's bluesy guitar score for the film also deserved a Best Original Score nomination. It was very raw and powerful, his guitar playing was at its best, and it fitted the grim mood of the film perfectly. However I think this underrated film was badly robbed of Oscar nominations in several other departments too, most notably Best Actor (Jason Patric) and Actress (Jennifer Jason Leigh). It didn't get nearly enough attention.

This is one of the best, solid and most potent police dramas in the past 20 years! I watch this film all the time, and 18 years later, still cannot believe it didn't snag not one single nomination.
I can understand Patric not getting in, as the five Best Actor nominees that year were very deserving of their nods, although I probably would have substituted Robin Williams in "The Fisher King" for Val Kilmer in "The Doors." But Leigh, should have been in thereas well as Clapton for song and scoreand Pete Dexter for adapted screenplay.
"Rush" was well-received that the time as well, and was part of the December Oscar-baited releasesthen again, if I had a penny for every time Oscar got it wrong, I'd be richer than Bill Gates right now!
