I agree that Hopkins is a much stronger performer across a variety of roles and that he easily bests Connery's attempts at a role like Lecter
But, going on accent alone, we are looking at a mid-Atlantic accent with a Lithuanian lilt, I'm sure Sir Sean could pass for that

Perhaps, but I wonder if both Connery and Michelle Pfeiffer regret turning down Lambs.
It works just fine as it is, yet Demme apparently wanted Pfeiffer for Clarice but she didn't want to do it due to the dark subject matter. She then did a dark take on Catwoman a year later and gave one of her best performances.
Norman! What did you put in my tea?

I'm sure they both do Toasted
But, before something is made it's all up in the air

She was a bit too much of a grown woman by then to be playing a rookie.
Jodie's about the same age, but she seemed younger.

Praise the Lord Connery turned the part down. He would have been terribly wrong for it.

Silence of the Lambs was beneath his lofty standards anyway

i think he would have been fine and would have played hannibal more charming that creepy.
sean wouldn't have taken the role because he wouldn't have understood it.
the only actor i've heard of who i'm glad he turned down that role would be deniro.

If Hannibal was supposed to be from Brooklyn, De Niro would be the go-to guy
