Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — What About Bob?

The psychiatrist was never crazy, not even at the end. What the psychiatrist did as a rational response to being stalked by Bob.

And that's what makes this movie so much fun!

Yes, its always fun to know that out mental health system allows raving lunatics run around annoying doctors and driving them insane. (Sarcasm)

I'm with you. I laughed through 2/3 of this movie, but then I got nearly as agitated as the psychiatrist. Bob was no longer funny, just supremely obnoxious and the entire family was insane for going along.
Yes, I realize that WAS the point and made it ironic and funny, but by the end, I was laughed out and just more than a bit tired of Bob.

Well, no - Dreyfuss's response was not rational at any point. What he SHOULD'VE done, is have Bob forcibly removed from his property right the moment he wandered back to his house after having promised to go back to New York the first time; clearly, Bob was stalking and trespassing. Instead, Dreyfuss at first does nothing and then tries to blow the bugger up. Not rational.

Yep. Never understood why Leo didn't just call the cops and have Bob arrested. It's not like the guy didn't do anything illegallet's see, stalking, breaking and entering, trespassing, impersonating a police officer, among other things.

He was probably worried about the negative publicity, what with his "Baby Steps" book coming out. He wouldn't want to look like an ineffective psychiatrist. Of course, he would have probably been justified, but that was probably his mindset. And after awhile, his family all came to know and love Bob, so he wouldn't want to look like a villain in their eyes. We really can't question why Leo did or didn't do it, because he is a psychiatrist, so he knows people.

Unfortunately, none of the those things, except perhaps impersonating a police officer, is really illegal.

I was watching this again recently and if you think about it, it really seems like Bob is actually the bad guy in this film. Leo is a schmuck but Bob is actually some kind of sociopath who basically tortures Leo from the first time they meet and ends up ruining his life. Does Bob actually have the phobias he talks about? I don't know, sure doesn't seem like it, although he's definitely mentally unstableor is he? The film wants you to dislike Leo because he is unlikable but Bob is equally unlikable in his own way. Funny film regardless.

In those days Bill Murray seemed like a guy who could play annoying easily. I've always liked him, but his later career movies are really awesome.
He was good in this one, and Dreyfuss was too.
