Aladdin is a decent disney movie. Beauty and the Beast went beyond what's expected of the animated genre and the songs in Beauty and the Beast are better than the songs in any other disney movie.

      I don't agree - I respect your opinion, but I don't agree Personally, I think
      Aladdin
is the movie that went beyond what's expected of the genre and presented perhaps the best Disney soundtrack to date, whereas
      Beauty and Beast
is merely decent. But, we're all untitled to our own opinions!

        I'm with you.
        Aladdin
was certainly a game changer that's for sure! Aladdin was the first animated film to do the whole "Pop culture in-jokes" thing, and it did it/pulled it off
        very well
without detracting from the story at all. Also after Robin Williams' excellent performance in Aladdin, it now became a thing for big celebrities (especially comedians) to crossover & do voiceover work for animated films.
Aladdin, IMHO, was the first Disney animated film to effectively blend a genuinely heartfelt story & comedy together, and no other character encapsulates that better than the Genie. Seriously Genie's character (and character arc) epitomize genuinely heartfelt & comedy.

Yes, I completely agree. Robin Williams' performance as the Genie is perfection; he managed to bring comedy to the movie without detracting from the plot.

I don't know. I think Disney's best films are Pinocchio and Beauty & the Beast, though both have their flaws. The real genre busting achievement came in 2001 when Hayao Miyazaki released Spirited Away, a film brimming with philosophical ambitions, followed by Pixar's masterpiece Wall-E, both of which are amongst the strongest films of the 21st century.

Pinocchio is perhaps Disney's greatest achievement, in my opinion. This doesn't necessarily mean that it's my
              favourite
Disney movie, but I am able to respect it. Beauty and the Beast is just your average DP flick; it's charming, but nothing special against others such as Cinderella, The Little Mermaid and Tangled. That's just me. As for Spirited Away I agree wholeheartedly when you say that it's one of the strongest films of the 21st century, let alone one of the strongest
              animated
films. Walle-E was also spectacular, though not as impressive. Despite all of this, Disney still stands out against any other animation company for me. Nothing beats the magic of Walt Disney.

Hmm Maybe I have to choose "Aladdin" too, but I love "Beauty & the Beast" as well. Aladdin and Jasmine are my favorite Disney couple, but Belle is my favorite Disney princess.

I love both films but I have to disagree with most of the people hereBeauty and the Beast is just on another level. First of all, I do love Robin as the genie but B&TB just has a more timeless feel, like an old fashioned fairy tale. I also feel it is a darker movie than this one, in terms of atmosphere, colo palette and the story itself. It has more emotional variance and depth than Aladdin. Both are brilliant pinnacles of animation and are close to one another in terms of quality, along with The Little Mermaid, but to me its like this
                  The Little Mermaid
                  Beauty and the Beast
                  Aladdin.
The Lion King is probably on the same level to me as Beauty and the Beast.

Aladdin is good, but nowhere near as classic as B&B. B&B has that timeless appeal while Aladdin is a comedy that is confined by its references. And Ashman/Menken's work on B&B cant be touched.

                      Aladdin isn't
                      just
a comedy though. It's a romantic, adventure, fantasy animated film.

I personally prefer beauty and the beast, i find the characters and story more interesting, and I love the songs, especially be Our Guest. however, Aladdin is my oldest son's favourite Disney film. He adored it when i took him to see it, but was only lukewarm about beauty and the beast. Both of us were left cold by Frozen.

I prefer BATB. The characters, story and songs are more appealing to me. Though I still enjoyed Aladdin greatly. Both are in my Top 10 Disney films.

This is a great topic because I've been trying to decide which of the two I prefer. For years I've thought Beauty and the Beast was superior and Aladdin was overrated because of all of the pop culture references. Now that I have a 2 year old daughter and have to watch both of these numerous times I'm torn. Both of them have their pros and cons.
Beauty and the Beast is more timeless because of its lack of topical references, but Aladdin is slightly more fun. Beauty and the Beast has the second most romantic relationship in a Disney movie after Tangled. I actually find the animation pretty equal, Beauty's is more realistic and Aladdin's is more colorful, but neither one are as good as Sleeping Beauty or Tarzan, glad to see some love for that animated gem. Although, I like both villains, I would give the upper hand to Jafar, but neither are as great as Maleficent or Frollo. As for the soundtrack, I believe Aladdin has one of the strongest Disney soundtracks overall, along with The Little Mermaid, The Hunchback of Notre Dame and Frozen. Beauty has some good songs, Belle and Gaston being my favorites, but I've never really cared for the title song.
These are just my humble opinions and both films are enjoyable in their own way. This is how I would rate the 4 reneinsance films personal:
1: The Little Mermaid- even though it is the least popular according to IMDB of the 4, it's still my personal favorite.
2/3: Beauty and the Beast and Aladdin- still trying to decide but may give to edge to Beauty cause it was a childhood favorite.
4: The Lion King: I don't want to get a lot of hate, but I enjoy the above Disney films and others more. It does have a great villain and lovely animation though.

To me, BATB is still the zenith of that second Renaissance period.
Aladdin is entertaining, but if ranking TLM, BATB, Al, and TLK, AL I place at #4.
Yeah, the comedy and songs are good, but it really zip by like an action-comedy.
There is emotion there, but it often zips on-and-off. Was watching the film with my friends a few weeks ago, and was surprised how very 'stacatto' the film is in how it moves from place to place.
Williams is good for sure, but it almost becomes like Heath Ledger's role in 'The Dark Knight,' where every other person claims the film is the best ever, simply because of 'one role.'
                                  "Thanks, guys." "So long, partner."

Nope. I think Aladdin has aged fairly poorly, despite some great charm. I think that the first segment of the film (everything until the Genie is introduced) borders on perfect, but the film is a little too fragmented from then on. Robin Williams' schtick gets tiresome almost immediately after his introductory song sequence, and while most of the scenes for the rest of the film are strong, it never holds together cohesively to me. It's a bizarre fever dream of a film, ricocheting from arguably the most romantic song in Disney canon (I Can Show You the World) to Jack Nicholson impersonations to that intense scene where Aladdin almost drowns.

                                      BATB is better.

                                      1. The best development of romantic relationships between main characters- they are really falling in love gradually, no love/attraction-at-first-sight routine.
2.Beast as a male hero goes through more serious character transformations (no pun) than Aladdin. More character growth.
3.BATB aged better, Aladdin-not so much. Over reliance on pop culture jokes in Aladdin makes the movie in many ways out dated now.
4.The humour in Aladdin, while funny in many ways, was too much of American style of humour, more jerky, less subtle.
                                      2. While Genie was funny and entertaining character and Robin Williams did a great job, there was too much focus on comedy because of that. BATB had a better mix of sad, angst and funny.
It also doesn't help now, that you know that this famous funny actor who voiced Genie committed suicide.
5.Jasmine runs away because she has marriage problems. While Belle also has a suitor she doesn't like and doesn't want to marry, she runs away because she wants to find and rescue her father. Her running away is not motivated by romantic trials and tribulations. A better start of adventure for female heroine.
6.Belle has a better range of hobbies - she is not only romantic and wants adventures, she is also bookish and well-read person. Jasmine, apart from having a pet tiger and wanting to rebel against marriage laws and marry for love, doesn't seem to have any other interests and occupations in life.
7.BATB was a game changer. The first animated movie to be nominated for Oscar as Best Picture. The first picture to receive 3 Oscar nominations for Best Original Song.

Beauty and the Beast is overrated. Give me Aladdin, anyday!

I too would pick Aladdin over BATB. There is no doubt that both are great movies with superb animation and music, but one area that I feel Aladdin outdoes BATB is the secondary characters. Abu, Iago, Genie, Carpet, Raja, Sultan, Head Guard etc, were all more interesting and cleverly fleshed out than the secondary characters in BATB, whom I found to be a teeny bit boring.
