According to Ferrara, Keitel signing on (after Walken said the part wasn't for him) made the whole film darker, changed the tenor of many scenes. The traffic stop scene was actually supposed to end with Walken and the girls kind of dancing in the streets as the sun came up, having fun. But Keitel wanted to take it a different way Funny thing is that one of the girls was his babysitter at the time.

Yeah I've read a few of those things about how much darker the film got with Keitel signing on. I mean, he may not be the biggest name but I'd say that he probably is the only person who could pull this role off. He just embodied the character. Yeah, him her jerking off seems crazy but it's not THAT far fetched. It just seems, idk, plausible with Keitel in the role. I personally know Ex Cops who were doing these things. Not that scene but the drugs, gambling, girls, stealing from dealers, dealing it themselves etc etc There was a big thing where I live and a few DTs got the boot.

And definitely not taken away from Walken because he's a great character actor himself, especially at the time. 'King of New York' and 'At Close Range' come to mind But Keitel is a Method Actor. Every scene of him doing the debauchery looks real and it made the film what it is.

The best part is what he's saying!! I find it hard to believe he didn't dump his load right in front of them And THAT is what I'm talking about lol. Even the scenes of him booting up junk and such, it's all done very well. He really dived in.
