You can add me to the list of people who loves this movie.
I dont pay a lot of attention to bad reviews on IMDB, and certainly dont always agree with critics either. As comedies go, Captain Ron is just good fun and enjoyable. It is one of Kurt's most memorable parts and I enjoyed the rest of the cast as well.
You get "caught up" in the good feeling of sailing and traveling in a classic yacht. It is really beautiful when they clean and fix it up.
I bought the DVD at Wal Mart for $5.88 . Was happy to find it at a great price.

Yeah, me too it's one of my all-time favorite comedy movies. I bought it on VHS, and then when it came of on DVD I bought that also. And then when it got cheap ($4.99 in the bargain bins) I bought 5 more copies for Christmas gifts.
It may be a water- and boat-lovers thing. Either that reviewer hates water and boats, or he was on a heavy dose of sleeping pills when he reiviewd it.
Anyway, we watch it every year when we go camping and boating in the San Juan Islands (off Washington state), and kids from all the surrounding camps gather around.
Favorite lines: "A diesel likes its oil like a sailor likes his rum." "Why is that Captain Ron?" "Nobody knows." We go around for days after saying, "Why it that Captain Ron?" -

I agree.the bit about Ron falling asleep with his eyepatch over his GOOD eye, and the kids looking at that wide, staring GLASS eye & thinking Ron died (and the jump when he suddenly wakes up!) never fails to set me laughing out loud!
And when ROn looses his glass eye at the dance & chases it all over the dance floorhilarious!
And Mary Kay Place was quite hot in the movie!!! (actually, so was the daughter!) -

Curt503,
That has to be my favorite line as well. It's just so out of left field cause Martin is expecting this expert answer. I always try to slip that in when someone asks me a computer question:
" Yeah, why is that?"
" Well, no one knows, really"
Having just turned legal age to buy alcohol, I was in the rum section the other day and lo and behold: Ron Rico rum. Nice little inside joke there

What exactly do you find funny or even tolerable about it? The jokes are way too telegraphed, and all the characters think they're way funnier than they actually are. I remember watching this movie as a kid, and even then I knew it was junk. I just tried to watch it again, even for the sake of laughing at how bad it is, but it's not even funny when doing that.

I guess it's just a matter of taste I suppposewhat some folks find funny others don't. I personally like mindless, lowbrow "humor-for-humor's sake" type comedy (think Three Stooges, Gilligan's Island, Airplane, All in the Family, etc) like Used Cars, 48 Hrs., and Captain Ron. Just funny to me that's about it.
But for the life of me, I can't find what folks think is so funny about, say, M.A.S.H.I've sat thru numerous episodes & never cracked a smile, but others rave about it. Just different tastes that's all. -

"Hard to belive "Captain Ron" and "Wyatt Earp" (Tombstone) are the same guy!" I was just thinking the same thing. It's like you are in my head or something! Reviews are just reviews, this movie will last over time and hopefully go into the Smithsonian as the greatest movie of all time!
