For me the worst aspect about the casting was that Forest looked very out of shape and it was really hard for him to be believable as a soldier

That's interesting because I have the DVD and on the extras that was talked about. I think it was the studio, or financiers, who told Neil Jordan they didn't want an American and Forest was too hefty, obese to be playing a soldier, but they went with him anyway.

I'm from Totenham and I've never heard that accent but then again he did say he was born (can't quite remember where) abroad so that could account for it.

Maybe they cast FW in order to secure US financing. I thought his accent was quite good and he was believable as a soldier.

Yeah, I thought it was a little odd. The accent seemed spasmodically decent, but I found it hard to accept that he was playing a British soldier. Maybe that's just in retrospect after seeing quite a few films in which he plays an American, though.

I found his 'accent' distracting.
At one point it went from chimney sweep Cockney to Australian, South African and then back again. In one bloody scene!
I've also never seen a squaddie with moobs.
