It is difficult to be certain what hold Dil (Jaye Davidson) still had towards Fergus (Stephen Rea) after the twist. He completely cuts any possibility of a romantic connection, he refuses to acknowledge Dil as a woman, and yet Fergus apologizes to Dil after he punches her and they continue to have a close bond though Fergus keeps correcting Dil whenever she refers to Fergus by intimate basis.
I believe Fergus loved the woman he thought Dil was and his guilt over Jody (Forest Whitaker) meant he felt he had the duty to protect Dil at any cost. Since he couldn't protect or save Jody, Dil was his way of atoning himself for what he did. -

That's a pretty interesting possibility.
When I first saw this movie, I thought Jody deliberately set up Fergus to fall for Dil for revenge, and that his friendliness was a way of manipulating Fergus. I thought telling Fergus that he wanted him to let Dil know what happened and that he cared for her was just a way of making sure they would meet. Not so sure now. -

That's what I was thinking also, but how did Jody not know that Fergus might snap and murder Dil when he learned the truth? I can only assume by that point Jody was confident Fergus wasn't a violent person and could harm no one.
