Why did Fergus go to jail, when he could have gotten off? SPOILER

It seems to me that Fergus and Dil could have come up with some story to tell the police, instead of Fergus taking the rap.
Dil could say that the woman broke into the apartment to kill her, and she caught her by surprise, took her gun and shot her. Dil could say she(he), shot her, because she had a second gun, she pulled out.
It would be self defense, as it actually was, and she could have gotten off for it. Especially if Jude can be traced back to kidnapping Dil's boyfriend. Jude can just be considered some IRA terrorist who decided to come after the lover of her former hostage, and it would make Jude look like the baddie and Dil look innocent.
But why did Fergus take the blame, and make it seem like a legally non-justifiable shooting instead? -

It would be safer for Fergus to hide out in jail for awhile
Are you kidding? Prison is the easiest place to have someone killed.
