Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Death Becomes Her

    bazerker2003 — 11 years ago(November 02, 2014 10:22 AM)

I own this on DVD and it's the crappy 1.33:1 pan and scan format.
Although it wasn't a huge box office hit when it was released in 1992 it wasn't a flop either. With a worldwide gross of close to $150 million it faired well for 1992.
Since then the film has grown in popularity. So I doubt the lack of better quality releases is due to Universal feeling there is lack of interest or that it financially isn't worth their interest. They've transferred far less popular films to blu ray.
Does anyone with inside info know why there is not a North American home DVD/Blu Ray release of this film? Was the original print destroyed? Are there contractual or legal hold-ups?
I just don't get it. It didn't even get some 20 year anniversary love.

The only thing that I could possibly think is that BluRay/DVD releases seem to be much more on the back burner right now. Most releases, especially special edition releases, are sold through digital formats. Also this film is available to rent on VUDU in HD if you were wanting to watch it in better quality.

It's available on Blu Ray on 1.85:1 perhaps not in the US, but it is for sale in other countries.

Yup. Just watched it. German release (English audio ofc). Sadly, no 5.1 though. Only 2-channel.

Is teh German Blu Ray version worth it - regardless of the sound. Is the picture quality superb?
            Thanks

It was not amazing quality, but it was good enough. Not the Blu-ray sharpness you see on newer titles, but that's because it's old. Worth a few bucks if you ask me.

I got this in the post the other day and tbh I cant complain lol it looks fantastic and way better than dvd and the HD digital copy ive had, infact it looks that much clearer the make up on the actors looks terrible haha you can see every single bit on their faces specially on madelines hand as 1 gets younger and the other still looks old..the old make up on the hand looks horrid now the pic is crystal clear, only cost me 6 too lol
as for the sound tbh I have a 4 very loud speaker set up 2 behind to the side of where I side then 2 behind the tv but angled facing outwards so everything always sounds great anyway

Scream Factory is finally changing that this November. Between this and releasing "Tales from the Crypt: Demon Knight" on Blu-ray, they're quickly becoming my favorite company to get genre titles from.

Great news, I wonder if they'll release Village Of The Damned '95.

At this point, I wouldn't be surprised if they do at some point. They seem to have it made with Universal and their genre titles.

OMG as if this couldn't get any better, they're FINALLY releasing You'll Like My Mother on DVD/Blu-ray. It was filmed at the Glensheen Mansion (where a real double-murder occurred just 5 years after the movie was filmed) in my home town of Duluth, MN, and has been long forgotten. I've never seen it before, as the VHS is long since out of print. I could KICK myself for not watching it when it was uploaded to youtube (it has since been removed for copyright reasons).

                            You mean a North American
                            widescreen
                            release?
Death Becomes Her has been available in the UK as a widescreen DVD release for many years. I picked it up dirt cheap ages ago. A computer with VLC can play DVD's from all over the world without region code restrictions
It seems that the Universal only gave US customers the full frame version. As other people have pointed out, there's a German Blu-Ray and more recently Scream Factory have announced a new Blu-Ray and the HDTV broadcast doesn't look bad either.

I agree. It should be given a DVD/Bluray release.

No updates yet, but considering that it's a Collectors Edition release, we should be getting some good ones, hopefully the original ending!
