Marisa Tomei should have played Meg

You mean "All the Way" Mae? Lol.
I love Marisa Tomei, seriously, love her. But honestly I don't think the Mae role would have suited her character. I think she'd fit the Evelyn character, the mother part.
Just my two cents. -

Holy crap. I've seen this movie dozens of times, and I just said to myself that one of the girls at the 'Charm and Beauty' school looks kind of like Tea Leoni. Sure enough, was Tea Leoni.
Love this movie. Between Hanks and Lovitz it's one of the funniest movies ever. -

I don't have much use for Madonna as an actor (and zero as a music talent), but I have to concede she was fairly well cast for this and did her job.
As good as this movie was, it was GROSSLY miscast in so many areas. IMO, Hanks put this film on his back and carried it.
Anyway, I think Tomei would have been perfect as Betty Spaghetti. The scene when Betty gets the telegram should have been heartbreaking but the actress who played Betty just butchered it. If I were the director, I would have tried this scene with a few of the other girls and see if one of them could have made this scene memorable. If so, I would have switched their characters around.
Is very bad to steal Jobu's rum. Is very bad. -

Marissa Tomei would have done a good job, but the story was about Dottie and Kit, and Marissa was too big a star to play a character role. She would have been a distraction. Besides, I think Madonna was very good.

she came to international attention in 1992 with the comedy My Cousin Vinny, for which she received an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress

Yes, I know that but one successful role did not make her too big a star to have a role in A League of Their Own. Are you saying that Geena Davis was less of a star? Ms Davis had already had an Oscar (The Accidental Tourist), along with hit films Beetlejuice, The Fly and Thelma & Louise. Madonna was already a star, as was Hanks. So to say that Ms Tomei was too big a star to do this film, is absurd.

Marisa would have been a great addition. She could pull off retro.
But I love Madonna and Madonna/Rosie in this movie.
Marisa's star wattage wouldn't have mattered. The Peaches had an assortment of actresses, from no-names to Madonna who was enormously popular and had just starred in the high profile Dick Tracy.
