.. I'm really sorry. I'm not lazy or anything, just that I can't seem to find the movie and the book at all and I've been waiting forever for it to be on tv(lol).
I just want to know, again, why Rita wanted to be an old man. Many thanks.

She didn't want to be an old man. She was afraid of the world and of living. When she met the old man, she briefly thought about how easy she thought her life would be if she were him. She said she could just 'be'. He thought the same about her. Hope this helps.
