Even if White surrended and lived, he would still be a broken man. He killed his two close friends to save Orange.

He had gotten shot twice. He spent the whole movie in agony. He was going to die anyways. Not really surprised he told him, but he shouldn't have been surprised when White put the gun to him.

I agree, but I think he definitely felt guilty (dead cops, shot a civilian, White trusted him and paid for it) and believed he was probably going to die from his wound anyway.
