I disagree. Waitresses should get tips.
You've seen Guy Standeven in something because the man was in everything.

Tipping is not a big thing in New Zealand.
Tipping in New Zealand is considered a true “merit-based” system, as it is not necessary to tip at restaurants, hotels, bars, salons, or spas, as well as in a taxi, unless the service exceeds all expectations. Employees in New Zealand typically earn a decent wage, so tipping is, in fact, a true sign of a job well done.
My fridge broke down a few days ago. Repairmen are hard to pin down to a time, but my guy turned up right on time and did such a quick efficient job, that I gave him a few more dollars than he asked so he could have a few beers on me. That's how it works here.

That sounds on par from fun facts I've read that listed things you would only find in the USA. Tipping was one of those things.

In some countries wait staff get a decent enough salary, but in others they get paid a pittance and thus rely on tips.
I'd much prefer people get paid decently and tipping be done away with.

When you deal with any worker in customer service you're a fool not to tip. They can do an average job or they can do an excellent job.
And never piss of a person who handles your food. Just common sense. If you intend on returning to an establishment you're a fool not to tip.

With any service worker? Sounds a bit like bribing someone to do the job they're paid to do. Nobody tips their cashier at the grocery shop…
I always tip wait staff (I know of too many restaurants who take advantage).

No, you tip where there is a personal service. A cashier at the market just rings up merchandise. That's not personal service. I'm referring to someone who handles your food, washes your car, cuts your hair. It may make the difference between good service and excellent service, especially if you're a repeat customer.

Ah ok, I see what you mean now. Customer service to me is a broader term than just personal services. The person one calls up to vent all unhappy customer frustrations counts.
