Was he mentally challenged? The kids acting was horrific. He sounded like a straight retard.

Michael DeLuise was/is a fine actor with an interesting speech pattern & tonality.
Also, your use of the word "retard" is not only wildly offensive to all of mannered society, but is mildly offensive to even to folks with minimal education or life experience. -

Whether you're referring to the character or not, the word "retard" is extremely offensive. My son, who has cerebral palsy, has been called this terrible word many times and each time is very hurt by it. Though they are wrong to do it, I can get why kid say it, but adults saying it? Give me a break. They just must be ignorant or plain stupid. Which are you drifter1?

Your comment may be true. However, I've met several 5 year olds who were highly verbal, articulate, and very funny. A friend of my cousin asked me if I would babysit one afternoon for about four hours. The little girl was 5, and as she told me "almost six!" She was hysterical! Her remarks/comments about this and that had me in stitches. She spent a lot of time examining my textbooks and said "Do you really like this stuff?" At the time I was living in a tiny apt. in E. Hollywood while going to school. After her mother dropped her off, she said "everyone who lives around here must be poor"-
Anyway, the kid playing Theo seemed like a narcotized brat.
ARE YOU NOT ENTERTAINED??!!

There are a whole range of abilities found among a group of kids of the same age.
Our school system had speech screening before first grade or during (I forget exactly when). I asked the speech therapist why not screen earlier. She said, if they had, half of the kids would have exhibited speech impairments. The message: wait until the right age to screen to find kids who will need help.
My older daughter needed help with speech due to a variety of reasons. My younger daughter didn't make a sound until 2 or 3. When she did, she was word perfect.
