No, certainly not radically different at all. I'd also say that out of all the visual adaptations I've seen, Bruce Timm's animated franchise probably captures the spirit of the comics the best. Even when changes are made, his series seem to really understand the iconic characters of the DC mythos and capture their intended tone. They have substance and they also have style. They incorporate aspects taken from the entire history of the comic books, yet also create their own ideas (some of which have even been integrated into the mainstream comics, such as Harley Quinn and the portrayal of Mr Freeze as a tragic villain). I fear Western animation may never replicate the sheer depth of the DCAU.
Opinions are like anuses; everyone has one, some are more likely to be beep up than others -

Before I begin I just wanted to note how impressive all three of the Batman serieses have been and how much of an impact they haev had on the entertainment industry. The "Burton-verse" was the first comic book movie that could really have been taken seriously and not viewed as mere kids entertainment. The Animated series and the films did the exact same thing for cartoons and proved that animation was not limited for kids. I also find it impressive that the direct to video movies such as Subzero are really on par with the that had theatrical release. Now, The Nolan series had a similar impact in that comic book films could be set in a realistic envirornment and still be believeable. Having said that I wanted to state that it has been a while since I seen some of these films(more in particular Batman Returns) so they may change if I see them again. So without further adu here is the ranking for all the Batman movies that I have seen.
- The Dark Knight
- Batman: Mask of the Phantasm
- Batman
- Batman Begins
- Batman: Subzero
- Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
- Batman Returns
- Batman Forever
- Batman vs. Dracula
- Batman & Robin
