So if you end what you consider canon with this film, logically he must have died. Why does canon end with this film though? After this film, there was another season, then Adventures of Batman and Robin, and 2 direct-to-videos. Is there a reason canon should end with Mask of the Phantasm (besides "you say so")?

What were the subsequent Joker episodes after the film? I can't speak for the other poster but the film certainly has a definitive TAS feel. The story is so powerful, so well done it almost HAS TO BE canon. If there is anything out there that should be canon it would be this. But then it would be contradicted by that other film that should definitely be canon, The Dark Knight Returns.

The movie implies that the Joker would've been killed by Andrea, but then again we don't see her kill him which leaves it open. I know for some people the prospect that the highly unpredictable and very resourceful Joker, whose pockets are full of gas, acid, and bombs could've escaped is sacrilegious and borderline criminal (no pun intended) but it really doesn't bother me to think he survived.
If anything, that kind of provides more of a sting to Batman whenever he has to stop one of the Joker's murderous crimes because Batman argued for Andrea to spare him. He survived somehow, yet continues to antagonize Batman. Plus Andrea chose trying to murder the Joker instead of letting go, forcing her to abandon Gotham and Bruce Wayne forever. Yet she failed, but still can never return. Batman however, who came second in Andrea's choice, is stuck with the insane Joker, whom Andrea chose over him. It's a damn bit depressing when you think about it.
Then again, the Joker reappears in
Batman: The Animated Series
in episodes with Robin, which since Batman is still alone in B:MOTP, suggests those episodes happened later. Not to mention
Justice League
,
Justice League Unlimited
, and
Batman Beyond
which are all a part of the same continuity. In fact,
Batman Beyond: Return of the Joker
provides the actual canon death of the Joker.
Can't be too careful with all those weirdos running around. -

That's what I was about to say. How he survived, I have no idea. On one hand, "Phantasm" get away with the Joker. On the other, she ended up alone the psycho killer clown man. It could've gone either way, and the fact that The Joker shows up alive and well after the events of this movie pretty says it all.
