Realities of aging. When your you're old, time is short and you've seen enough bulls#!t for one lifetime so when you say something you aren't going to pull any punches, in fact you're probably going to use language to add a certain emphasis. When you've put up with bull for 50 plus years you've gained the wisdom to cut to the chase. These are not metrosexuals sipping macchiatos in a trendy part of downtown Seattle. These are working class guys from a small town in Minnesota. They talked about sex when they were young and now being older and getting a lot less they talk about it even more. Thank god for viagra. As for your criticism that the movie focuses too much on old geezers talking about sex. That's what it is supposed to be about. That's the plot. Two retired widowers who fought over the same woman, and now a new beautiful widow has moved next door for them to fight over. Love, sex, and fighting for the attention of a woman is the story being told. Shakespeare said "all is fair in love and war", even he knew damn well that wisdom and class go right out the door, no matter how old you are, when fighting for the love of a woman. And beside they don't work. The guy who tries to exude wisdom and class will always lose out to the guy willing to fight to the last full measure because he has the wisdom of knowing how to win. Faint heart never won fair lady.
So there.
My advice, don't watch this movie. You'll probably like The English Patient better. -

I find all of them adorableGrowing up with my grandparents, they are exactly like thisI tell my Grandma all the time her filter is goingI think when you get old and have busted your butt your whole life, you earned the right to say whatever comes to mind. Also, having a grandpa in his 70's, he shows the sex drive does not disappear, as he likes to comment about Vanna White and her "outfits" oftenAre the elderly supposed to act dead while waiting to die?

) If it comes from the main plot and characters, that's just idiosyncratic If that's what the movie's about, then that's what the movie's about.
Wisdom is not shown by refraining from profanity, although class might be but they were insulting each other; what need do they have to be classy?!
Old age is not some venerable period where you stop being human.

This thread is one of the most bizarre I've seen. Are you actually serious? Foul language? They call each other Moron, Putz, Shmuck, and Dickhead. It's not like they're running off every four letter curse in the dictionary.
Now, I'm only 26 I've watched this movie since I was 8, and if there's anything I take away from it, it's the amazing repertoire that Lemmon and Matthau have with each other. It's a light-hearted comedy about being able to love in the final stage of your life. If you can't get past the language, then you have led a very sheltered life.
As far as the elderly being able to share wisdom, did you not see when Burgess Meredith went on about life is full of experiences, and that's all that matters? I keep seeing people chastise the writers for making a poor film, but I commend them for making such a realistic portrayal. It's not like there was a fart joke every five minutes, or horrible depictions that usually come with the elderly. I mean, how would the elderly feel if all that was portrayed was a bunch of rambling grey hairs with no bladder control who can't remember anything? At least these characters are presented with respect. The respect to lead their own lives, make their own decisions, and not be the invalids that most assume elderly people are.
Yes, they talk about sex, they swear at each other, and they fight But why does that have to be a young man's game? Wait until the inevitable day they make a terrible remake that's filled with farts, urine and the actual act of sex instead of joking about it! Then you'll change your minds whip-fast. -

Foul-mouthed? I was crying from laughing so hard at all the euphemisms they used to say the same thing such as the outtakes at the end of the movie relating to sex. I used to watch brothers living together and sisters living together fight like this. THey were all widows, widowers, or never married. As to the Polish names they hurled at each other just be glad you did not know what they meant. My mother and a friend of hers who used to work at the local mental hospital were talking about the size of an old man's anatomy and having to tie a string to it to find it. I was a bit shocked. I was 29 at the time. Now at 59 I have been exposed to a lot worse and a lot more age related so it just gives me the giggles.

I couldn't disagree more. I find it FUNNIER when older people are talking about raunchy things and cursing. I'd think if you had a sense of humor you would find it funny too. There are plently of older men that talk like they did in the movie and I laugh everytime. You don't have to change completely just because you are older. Also in the end it's just a movie and that's all.

I live in Minnesota and know two old guy's just down the street from me and they carry on just like Max and John in 'Grumpy Old Men'I have almost passed out sometimes at the things these men say and do in public LOL!

Well, I'm mid 40's and my friends and i have always called each other names, affectionately. Is it crass and vulgar, better believe it but we do it because we are the best of friends. At the hospital, Walter admits he is a friend to the nurse. We don't always agree or like each other but at the end of the day, we are there for each other. The way we are isn't everyone's cup of tea but my wife says this me and my best friends 30 years from now, and I won't disagree and I certainly won't apologize.

I am a gramma and I find them VERY amusing and the entire movie was brilliant. And very real. It was sweet and bawdy and funny and heart warming.
You, I suspect, are a young ageist snob who has no feelings for older people. Some day you will be old and when the youngsters start finding fault with you, I hope you remember your bad attitude here.

This movie has more CLASS than you could ever have.
