I don't believe they were Jewish, just Minnesotan! Some people in that particular area use phrases like "Oy-vey" and "Uff-da" it goes along with the accent!

Jacob is usually a Jewish name, and so is the last name of his character.

That's the impression I got, but not very observant.

I'm a total wasp and say "Oy gevalt" and "tuchus." Yiddish has some great expressions that perfectly cap off a sentence.
Max might of been Jewish; but, he might also just be non-religious, so he probably didn't care if he was married in a Christian church.

Is he suppose to be Jewish?> Well the answer is yes .. and no.. at the same time.. it's actually complicated..

                    1. Yes Walter Matthau is Jewish.
                    2. They play characters that in general aren't Jewish.
                    3. Nevertheless, Walter's character is allowed to be portrayed as Jewish. In the sense of why not.. 'Suspension of Disbelief'..
                    4. The characters are funny, the story is funny.. the movie is a comedy.

You really have to ask if characters named Max and Jacob Goldman are Jewish? Really?
