Hello, Englishman here raised in Canada. Never really taught about the England occupying Ireland thing in school over here, this is the first film I have seen showcasing it. Would like to become educated on the subject, can anyone recommend any literature or documentaries please?
Absolutely love this film, and absolutely shocked that my countrymen acted like this. I no longer want to be ignorant on the history of this conflict. DD Lewis's performance in this was top notch, his scenes with Pete Postlethwaite where unlike anything i have ever seen.
thanks, and listen to Paul McCartneys song Give ireland back to the irish: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kaO4XeHhwo8

why would you believe this biased little movie ?
with an admission of ignorance of the facts, you would do well to read about the true events ie both sides, before you start judging your fellow countrymen. May I remind you , those fellow countryment fought and defeated a 30 year terrorist campaign. You should be proud of that fact.

Oh shut it. England has been known throughout history for going to war because they felt that it was 'their' land to control, which is exactly why the Revolutionary war happened as well, to be free of England's crown and to rule as their own country. Ireland wanted the same thing, England just couldn't accept it. Still can't apparently.
Back off, man. I'm a scientist!

Probably a bit late on replying lol but if your talking about the looooong history of it I suppose you could watch 'Michael Collins'? Or if your just talking about the troubles, you could watch 'Bloody Sunday'? Not really sure of any other films to suggest, but I'm sure theres loads of info on google about the English in Ireland.
