I think Daniel Day-Lewis is choosing his roles very carefully and successfully And he is very (I mean VERY, VERY) devoted to his role.

It's one of his better performances for sure. I liked him better in
        The Age of Innocence
that year and would have nominated him for that instead. Still, I think Hanks, Neeson and Hopkins were all better (I barely remember Fishburne's film), and I'd have given one of them the win over him.

It's absolute bull$hit that he didn't get the Oscar and TH did.

I especially liked his monologue when he and his father first got into prison. Wow!

Mine too. That must be one of the best father-son scenes ever shot. It's precious.

Out of all the roles Daniel Day-Lewis has played this I believe this is his finest performance. I always thought it was Bill the Butcher followed closely by Daniel Plansview and Christy Brown which are tied. But his performance as Gerry Conlon is his best. It's the most multi-layered character he's ever played.
The character had it all. Humour, vulnerability, strength, intensity etc.. The range of emotions he shows throughout the film is just incredible. It's such a rich and varied character with extraordinary depth.
DDL acting range is astounding. He is certainly one of the best actors of all time. This performance cemented that for me. It's one of the greatest acting performances ever caught on film.
