First off, Shackelford did NOT say there were a couple thousand members, he said there were a couple dozen. But I do agree, that I don't think there was any sort of club because Shackelford didn't seem to know what Gage was talking about when he asked about it. It was just a story to let Dee go.

From what I can remember, it was pretty obvious that Redford's character was making it up. Even Demi's character knew that he was lying it was his way of saying "I'm letting you go," and she understood that and thanked him hence the kiss. Otherwise, he would've gotten a beating.

Def Made it up right there in the car, thats when he realised she could never love him the same way as she did Woody's character. She kissed him for giving her the chance to walk away and then she did.

I'm pretty sure she was about to dump him when he interrupted with the story. So he was dumping her first and making it seem like he was being nice about it with the obviously fake story. Basically, being a jerk but seeming nice like he did throughout the film (i.e., cheating with the coin, buying their house, stalking her)

SHe knew he was lying as well, or else she wouldn't have kissed him before leaving the car.

The whole car scene was very odd.

                  yeah it wasn't clear..
but basically he was fake acting like she thought he was in the first place, some rich perverted beep
really, he just loved her and wanted her to love him back but when he found out she still loved her husband and would never love him like that, he let her go.
i was a bit confused about the "thank you".
they really should have showed some scenes of her unhappy with redford or something, because she seemed pretty happy

She thanked him as in "Thanks for letting me be with you; I had a nice time."
Of course he made up the whole thing because he knew she would never love him the way she loved David. He realized he had done everything he could.

She didn't thank him for the reason you mentioned lol.
She "thanked" him for helping her reaffirm her belief that Woody was the right man for her the whole time.

Yeah it was made abundantly clear actually. In the blu-ray version anyway (not sure if there is a difference). When Demi gets out of the car to chase after a passing bus, Redford's personal driver asks him "What was that all about?" to which Redford's character replies "She'd never look at me the way she did him". So I feel as though it was pretty obvious that the story was a complete jerky fabrication. Decent movie though; I thoroughly enjoyed the cast.

Yeah, exactly, it is this way in the standard theatrical release as well. In fact it happens right after her reunion with Woody's character at the zoo benefit. As Demi and Gage/Redford are driving home, Demi's character asks Redford to talk, and he shuts down the conversation (in which she is clearly going to say that she isn't completely happy) by bringing up the "million dollar club" in an obviously forced way. The chauffeur expresses his bafflement at the "million dollar club" story as soon as Demi gets out of the car. Redford clearly indicates that he did it to give her a reason/excuse to leave because Redford figured out that "she would never look at me the same way she looked at him" (I am paraphrasing but that is close).
