Who was Ice Cube supposed to be?

He was on the Breakfast Club talking about this. He was offered to play O-dog if I'm not mistaken. Cube turned it down because he said he didn't want to be typecasted since he had just played Doughboy in Boys in the Hood before that

Good move on Cube's part. I think having him in a similar role would not have benefited the Hughes Brothers and would have just made the audience think of this as a rip-off of "Boyz".

It was in he contract brokered by the Hughes Brothers and New Line Cinema that the completed film was to have a Platinum rapper in the ensemble. Spice 1 was tapped to play Caine (although he says he was offered the role of O-Dog); 2Pac auditioned to play O-Dog but accepted the role of Sharif; and MC Ren received the role of A-Wax but left the project without an explanation although he had recently joined the Nation of Islam and probably wanted to focus on completing "Shock of the Hour."
2Pac is the only one who shot scenes for the movie but his character was recast when 2Pac created tension on the set. 2Pac said he left because he believed the character of Sharif was contradictory but the press leaked information that he had, in fact, been fired which spurred an altercation involving him and the Hughes Brothers. A different rapper might have been cast in Too Short's role but I haven't heard such. This is the first I'd heard that Ice Cube was among those considered.
