Simply tell his children he was Mrs. Doubtfire when he had a moment alone with them? I haven't seen the movie, so I may be wrong as to whether or not he did this, but if he wanted to prevent more trouble, why couldn't he simply tell them?

I'm sure he didn't want them to accidentally let it slip. Or to act different around him as Mrs. Doubtfire. Not to mention what he was doing was illegal.
Seize the moment, 'cause tomorrow you might be dead. -

PreachCaleb might be right, but there is no where in the movie that nobody told him that he couldn't dress up as somebody else to see his kids. And another thing I am sure that 2 of the 3 children could keep it a secret, the other one wouldn't and would be the weakest link. Chris and Lyida would be able to keep it a secret, and were able to do so when Chris opened the bathroom door when Daniel Hillard was going to the bathroom as Mrs Doutbfire. But Natalie looks like she is too young to keep such a big secret. And one could only imagine the look or how Miranda would react if Natalie had said this
Natalie: Mommy Daddy told us tonight, that he is Mrs. Doutbfire.
Somehow I bet you that Miranda would not have taken the news very well. He might have wanted to tell them, but he would have known that Natalie would not have keep the secret. And he was on a court order supervised visits every Saturday like you would have thought he was a murder. And when Chris and Lyida find out, he tells them, they can't tell Natale cause she will blow his cover.
