    Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Mrs. Doubtfire

    Those kids. They really milked that divorce and acted like they'd never seen their father before and it was the end of the world!

      Well, divorce is an extremely humiliating process for children to endure. It represents a loss of power, a loss of status, a loss of one's self. I can see why they reacted the way they did. Unless it was an abusive marriage, which it was not, the two absolutely should not have divorced. They could have simply separated, but still been legally married, so that they wouldn't have had to deal with alimony payments. What kind of idiot is Miranda? Doesn't she realize how expensive divorce is?

        That's why it's worth it.

          How do you figured that they milked the divorce?

            They didn't want the divorce so I can't see how they "milked" it. They pleaded with Miranda (sometimes just by being difficult and non-verbal), to let Daniel into their lives for those after school hours.
            They wanted for nothing in a financial sense, they just wanted love and attention. Daniel had, prior to the court rulings, never spent a day apart from his children since the day they were born and for Miranda to allow that ruling was self-serving and cruel. Same way as she belittled him in front of the children when she picked them up from his rather unkempt apartment - an apartment where they were at least getting daddy time. She went nuclear towards him after the Birthday party knowing they were in earshot - all the time her kids listening to her constant belittling of his messing everything up.

              I am in the same boar with you I don't see how the kids milked the divorce even since they did pleaded with her to have Daniel watch them after school and all she could say at one point "I'll think about it".

                Exactly. She could have intervened but she didn't.

                  And I guess it is a good thing for the kids that she didn't

                    They milked it in the way they kept sulking around, always whining about everything, acting like they only just met their father ten minutes ago and then someone came out of nowhere and snatched him away never to be seen again! That's how they milked it. Constantly saying, "I miss dad" on the first night of Mrs Doubtfire's visit>milked. Because they only just saw him, one night ago, even though they didn't know yet that Mrs. Doubtfire was their father.
                    Constantly yelling;
                    "This isn't fair mom!">Yeah Lydia, you know? Life's not fair.
                    Chris, no I haven't forgotten all this happened on your birthday, no it's not you fault, no you didn't even ask for a party-.yes kids get bad grades all the time and they get detention too. It's just that the party had to be broken up by the police because your father broke the law. The cop told him that the animal petting zoo was illegal to have, plus there's disturbing the peace, and who do you think paid the fines to keep your father out of jail the first time? Your mother.
                    Chris seemed almost like he had no free will and would just react and only agree whenever one of his sisters made on uncontrollable outburst. At least not until the bathroom scene anyway.
                    Meanwhile, Lydia was actually quite disrespectful to Daniel on two different occasions once before and once after the divorce. Saying" You got fired" to him at the bus stop. And declaring "You aren't trying very hard!" When having dinner in his apartment.
                    Now for three kids who had started the movie touting the message, we have father, and nobody else will dothat was one thing. But then, look how fast they warmed up to Stu! WoW! Was 180' degree turnaround, or did I miss something?Lydia and Natalie even helped Miranda pick out the sleaziest, low cut, mini skirted dress for her birthday ever! When the enter the restaurant, Stu is even holding Natalie!
                    EXPLAIN THAT!
