Always put yourself first. No one ever finds you irreplaceable. Stevens' employer recognized loyalty and experience but if he had to terminate Stevens or any servant for that matter, he would do so without regard or remorse. An employer, be it corporation or individual, do not care for anything or anyone but their own well being. Years of service, loyalty, knowledge, aptitude, none
of these things matter. No one is ever irreplaceable. Stevens gave his life to his employer and to his profession. He was terribly misguided in giving up everything in life. He realized too late that he threw away happiness when it could have been there all along. Moral of story: put your personal life first, above anyone else. Say no to employers. If they terminate your employment, then good, they had no regard for you at all anyway and would have terminated you anyway down the line. Walk away from mean spirited people. Learn to have respect for yourself above and beyond any one else, especially an employer.

There is nothing wrong with being the hard of a country house. I agree with that statement. in fact all legal work is honorable. The last comment indicated that the pursuit of romance was folly, when hobbies and skills could be attained and were a good substitute. There was no mention about relationships made. However, the movie was not necessarily about the missed romance, but the missed fulfillment of their relationship. Relationships are what make EVERYTHING worthwhile. Hobbies and skills, and educational endeavors, while adding something to our days are no substitute for deep relationships.

That as long as theres not a can of fava beans around, I could maybe sleep there with only one eye open. 'The Remains ', maybe a different title
Seriously, I really enjoy this movie but I just can never get Dr.Lecter out of my head. I only saw one in the series but have seen snippets of the 'fava beans' line from time to time.

Watch your step when carrying a silver tray across the garden.
