If they'd kissed….

I understand! I think that we expect their romance to play out because that's what we're fed in most, especially Hollywood, movies. That's why I love this movie (and book) it takes a different, much less traveled path, exploring what happens when love remains unrequited, or unexpressed. I was really surprised by this movie when I first saw it (I hadn't read the book), and in the final scene when the camera starts panning away from Darlinton Hall, I started yelling at the screen No! This can't be the end!!!! But after a lot of tissue and tears, this movie quickly became one of my favorites. And I agree, it wouldn't have been nearly as good if they had kissed or if a romance had developed between them. The end is sad, but I think it's much more real and true to the characters than a classic Hollywood ending would have been.

Exactly, the tension would have been broken, the whole film would have just become sort of, well not bad, but a different film entirely
Something happens between two people when that tension is broken, and sometimes it kind of ruins everything. Other times, it is just the beginning of something great. It is a mysterious thing, love and film and all that! -

You are all absolutely correct.
If you have seen "Sense and Sensibility" you will recall the scene where Elinor and Edward meet after Edward's being disinherited and Elinor offers Edward the parish of Col Brandon. That tension that is palpable is what makes for great cinema! Give me wild emotion, not sex.
As well, if anyone has seen "Shadowlands" with Hopkins, you may recall the scene in his classroom where he discusses with his students the "perfect love""The most exquisite joy, the love that is eternal, is not in the having, but in the desire" (or something like that) It breeds a hope within us that remains until it is either granted or dashed by films end. -

I wish they would have kissed. Even if they did, it was no guarantee that they would walk off into the sunset together.
I could very much imagine them kissing in that scene, with Mr. Stevens being the one to break it off, and then going on acting as if nothing had ever happened (but having to fight harder than ever to reign in his emotions,) leaving Miss Kenton even more frustrated and baffled by him than she was before
I think the tension would still be there.
I think it would have been a very intersting kiss, with Miss Kenton initiating it. Mr. Stevens would be very halting at first, but once his real feelings kicked in, it would be intense (of course that is what would really frighten him to the depths of his soul, realizing the he really could feel those emotions.) It would be too much for him, and that's why he would break away from the kiss -

I understand the main theme of the movie is them NOT getting together. How heartbreaking it is that Stevens is to weak, and loyal to his master that he hides his feelings for Ms. Kenton. But i really wished they got together all the same.

I feel that if they kissed, they would have begun something. However, I feel that it would have been one of those secret relationships that would inevitibly lead them to feeling personally ashamed. I think if they did start a secret relationship, it would inevitibly ruin their careers. I think it could have worked out if they still went their separate ways. I also believe that the story still could have ended the same way.

I knowespecially the scene in which she wants to know what book he is reading and she corners him behind his desk. That has to be one of the most tension-filled scenes ever filmedever. I think they filmed it in just about 3 or 4 takes, and it's absolutely, spot on brilliant.
