The music of this film flows perfectly along with the story. The underlying melody doesn't interfere with or overwhelm the dialogue. The music performs its artistic duty beautifully by enhancing the storyline, becoming part of the film only as needed, almost taking me unaware.
Right away I can think of four other films where I feel the score is integral: Casablanca, The Big Sleep, Vertigo, and The Golden Bowl. (The Golden Bowl's score was by Richard Robbins, who wrote the score for ROTD.)
Any other opinions? I'm interested.
