Damnit, where were they in the film?
Wayne said they would be at Waynestock, to which Garth replies possibly the funniest line of the movie; "Wow Van Halen! Who else?" -

They probably couldn't afford to pay them to be in it or they were touring/recording. Bands like that cost a good deal to use.
My guess is that it was certain Aerosmith was gonna be in it due to how well they got along on SNL. Cooper was in the first one due to being sociable with Spheeris but Aerosmith was a huger deal. I'm sure they just had money for them and a couple of the other smaller bands were in it but not enough for both them and Van Halen.
I guess Van Halen being referenced was a nod for Part 3 which never happened. Or you could say Wayne was BS'ing, it could be both lol. -

They weren't.
There were guys at the station wearing Aerosmith and Pearl Jam shirts, so they said that the bands playing at the concert they were organizing were "Aerosmith and Pearl Jam!" Then, a guy in a Van Halen shirt came along, and they added Van Halen.
As a kid, I always thought it was weird that Wayne didn't say Guns N' Roses, because Garth was wearing a GN'R shirt in that scene.
I'm a heavy metal maniac.
