Rachel said: "But you love that name."

I was always irritated rachel just HAD to grab hold of Monica's name as well. Monica was put on the spot although she was daft mentioning it I think she should have kept it to herself.
But Rachel is very selfish, so it's not surprising. I don't think she did it out of malice. But because she endlessly put herself first.
Sure she said you love that name to Monica, but seriously she didnt need much persuading!!
Plus Monica is Emma's aunt and at least a relative so I suppose its not so bad, instead of having a daughter with the name she gained a niece.
Going back to the original question its a programme so I doubt much thought went into it, but i know someone with thecsurname Green who has stated she will never hyphenate her surname if she marries because if you notice, Green sounds weird no matter what you put it with, as it is a colour. Try it.
also to moonlighty, pretty sure at did call Emma Emily at some point, that is what lead to Rachel slipping up and says it herself later in the episode.

She almost didn't go with the name Emma! Besides, Rachel could still argue over and over again, and Monica could say take it, over and over again, that would make for lousy tv, wouldn't you say? Given what Rachel had been going through, nine months before this, and the birth and not having a name readylet it go. Monica didn't even end up using the boy's name she picked for a boy so, I wonder who stole the name Daniel from her. Also, some of the blame has to fall on Ross, for God's sakes since he's Emma's father and Monica's older brother, he is just as involved in the name's theft by not demanding Rachel right then and there pick a new name and let Monica keep the name Emma. Ross should have come up with another name for the child since Rachel wasn't up to it. Instead of Ross his name should be "Toss" because he "Toss" the responsibility and let Monica lose the name Emma and came off scot-free!
Now let's look at Emma's last name GELLER-GREEN. Not Green, Not Green-Geller, it's GELLER-GREEN for crying out loud.
Remember how Toss, Susan and Carol had a giant argument about this same subject [except it was for naming Ben] that went on for episodes, and the lesbians tried to get Susan's last name in place of Geller?

Get over it you stupid bitches, there it is, clear as crystal, Monica let her have it, Monica gave it to her; and Ross should be blamed for not creating a name for Emma himself-he could have demanded Rachel choose a different name but he didn't. He stole the name as much as Rachel did-in fact, the name was not stolen it was given to her. I don't think you dumb ass people know the difference between stealing and being given something. -

Did everybody here forget that Monica ended up not even using the boy's name Daniel which supposedly meant the world to her anyway? When she adopted twins she ended up naming the boy "JACK" After her father instead of "DANIEL" the name she had supposedly loved to death and wanted since she was a child?
Why didn't she use the other name "Daniel" for her own son? -

MoonYeah thanks! [Sarcastic] well anyway, why is Ross absolved of all blame on the part of Emma's name anyway? Why didn't he demand that Rachel name the child something else and let Monica keep the name Emma? Why does he get off the hook? Ross should have had named the baby!
