To answer the OP however. They broke up. Because Rachel said so multiple times.

"We didn't get to dinner."
Monica
"Oh nice!"

"We kinda broke up instead."

"WHAT?!"

(on the phone)
"You know what? I don't wanna get back together over an answering machine."
Rachel
"Can I be your girlfriend again?"
So no room for argument. They broke up that night. Been said 3 different times by the very person who asked for the break.
If you're gonna pretend to cut her hair, at least put some scissors in your hand!

I don't agree. If I intended to end a relationship, there's no way I'd refer to it as "a break." Too ambiguous. To me a break would mean something like a coffee or lunch break something temporary.
If I meant to END a relationship with someone, I'd say something like 'This isn't working, neither of us are happy, so I think it's best for both of our sakes that we end this and move on." -

There is no consensus of opinion about what it means to be on a break. Different people have very different interpretations. There is no definitive answer.
A number of people feel that it is basically a polite way to break up.
But they did not break up because Rachel said something about a break from us. That just set the stage. When Ross arrived at the bar, he believed that Rachel was breaking up with him, but he wasn't sure, which is why he called.
They broke up because Mark was in the apartment when Ross called maybe half an hour later. Ross knew what it meant. He got it. Essentially everyone would interpret it the way that Ross did, and they would be correct 99% of the time.
Rachel knew what Ross thought, and she stayed there and talked with Mark rather than trying to find Ross.
This is what Ross has been anticipating and afraid of for quite a while. It is true that Rachel said something that didn't fit, and it didn't really register with Ross in the face of his realization that Rachel was leaving him for Mark. You would have to be either a Vulcan or into self-deception to have what Rachel said register.
As I have said many times, but probably not to you, the whole break or no break thing is a phony issue. It was not the issue at the time. Ross thought that their relationship was over because Rachel was having sex with Mark and leaving him for Mark.
On several occasions, Rachel acknowledged that they were broken up not on a break. She called the fact that they were broken up a technicality.
The writers later played a joke on the audience by giving Ross his, "We were on a break," tagline, but that was simply not the issue at the time. The only one who said they were on a break the next day was Rachel. Ross replied that they were broken up and Rachel called that a technicality. -

She would have said a temporary break up.In a temporary break up, you definitly can see other people.But definitly not in a break.A break is the time you take to decide wether to break up or work on the relationship.Sleeping with someone else in a break is cheating.

Oh, a temporary break up? She would have? Why didn't she? Forget Marta Kaufman and David Crane, I want to hear from the real creator of Rachel Green imaneassi. When you wrote her character in this episode "The One with the Morning After" how come you had Rachel say that they broke up instead of being on a break? I'm just curious cause in the previous episode, you didn't write her saying a temporary break up. Please explain, creator of Rachel Green.

Aww. That's so cute that you believe you can speak for how Rachel thinks when she's not your creation. You cannot say what Rachel thought at any point in the show as fact. Please learn to understand sarcasm as well.

I know for a fact that there was no break up till she found out he cheated."I'm glad you called" and trying to hide and explain Mark's presence is definitly not a break up. And "Ok, i get it" isn't a break up. He should have continued with" we're done" or "i'm done with you" in order for it to be a break up. There was no break up, he cheated.Period.

No, you don't. She told Monica in the morning that they broke up. She said on Ross' machine that she didn't want to get back together over the phone. So, she's saying they were broken up. Later on, Gunther tells her about what happened with Chloe and now suddenly Ross cheated. Rachel knew full well her break was a breakup. She states it several times before knowing what happened with Chloe.
After all these years of people pointing this out to you, it's pathetic that you still fight the facts that the show has given you and make up stuff.

Ross said that they were broken up. Rachel does not argue about it; she describes being broken up as a "technicality."

Then what difference does it make whether Mark was in Rachel's apartment or not? I mean she and Ross were broken up after all. She could be with Mark all she wanted.
