Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Friends

So I am re-watching Friends on Netflix. My husband and daughter have not see it. We just finished season 9. I don't like the Rachel & Joey story. I just feel like the writers got lazy around starting around season 8 and the show just started to fall flat. I still love it no matter what though and re-watching this again made me realize how much I love Phoebe! 😄

Neither did the actors. They rebelled and complained to the writers about it.
I have compared it to Little Red Riding Hood shacking up with the Big Bad Wolf.

One can argue that it started to decline even before that.

I personally never had a major problem with it especially given the fact that it never really went anywhere.

I think that's part of the problem, how they had devoted so much time building up to it, with Joey falling for Rachel and then Rachel falling for Joey, then they finally get together, and it's over in 3 episodes. So what was the point?
Plus it was pretty stupid of the writers because they knew season 10 would be the last one, and I'm sure they always planned Ross and Rachel to get back together in the finale, so again, why put the characters together when you know you have to end it in the season at some point?

              It's basically just for drama.
It happens all the time in this show where you spend all this time building up 2 characters as a couple, then they're together for no more than 5 episodes and break up.
Ross and Rachel spent around 2 seasons getting together. Then they only lasted 1 out of 10 years. The drama of Will They or Won't They was more important than them actually being together.
Look at Rachel with Joshua. Spent all that time with her acting like a hungry nymphomaniac. And when they were together, nothing came of it, and seemed Rachel didn't even like him that much once she got him.
We had all that drama with Chandler and Kathy. And they were together no time.
The writers were always good at building up love interests. But once they were together, the fun was gone. So they got rid of them, and sometimes in the stupidest of ways. Look at what happened with Gary, Pete, and Danny. And David's send-off was really bad.

If you're gonna pretend to cut her hair, at least put some scissors in your hand!

They just looked really awkward and weird kissing.

They also built up Joey and Janine then once they were finally together, she suddenly (out of nowhere) hates Chandler and Monica.
                  Next episode, she's moved out!?

I never understood that either, she never seemed bothered by them earlier.

Way before that, IMO. Friends had lost its steam by s 4, IMO. As soon as they got Monica and Chandler together, that was it for me.

raises hand awkwardly I liked it.
I have spoken to someone in real life, and she liked it as well (and said they were better than Ross and Rachel), but I understand that the majority of fans hated it, and if the cast hated it, then fair enough. It's understandable they ended it if it was something the cast didn't want to do.

I did too. It was actually the only storyline I did like in the final seasons. I always thought LeBlanc had more chemistry with Cox, but they put her with Miss Chanandler Bong. But Joey was very sweet in his feelings for Rachel.

I liked Joey falling for Rachel in season 8 as it felt natural, but Rachel's sudden change toward Joey felt forced.

An overwhelming majority didn't like the plot-line, the actors included.
That said I did like Joey falling for Rachel cause it felt natural and something Joey could do, where as Rachel falling for Joey felt out of place.

Yes. When Joey fell for Rachael, while watching Cujo, it was great. It felt so real. Things got kinda lame after that. But, it was a great start to the arch.

Yeah. You're not alone. Most people didn't like that pairing. Probably the biggest writing pitfall the show saw during it's illustrious run. As luck would have it though, most of the rest of the show was above board amazing, so most people forgive I think.
It was a sign that the writers were running out of ideas. They ended the show the next year (I think) and that was the right move. They wrapped it up before it got bad, which is something I wish a lot of other shows would have done. Hard to watch a great show go bad.

Unpopular opinion but I always liked them together. There were several hints throughout the show that there's a certain attraction between them. So I wasn't surprised at all when it finally happened 👍✌️
