So in "The One With Ross's Denial" Rachel needs a place to live since Chandler and Monica are moving in together. She asks Phoebe and we discover that Phoebe already has a roommate.

But who the hell is Denise?
Here's my theory: In the same episode, we see Joey interviewing a potential roommate (the most smoking hot woman ever by the way) and I reckon that was Denise.
A couple of episodes later, Phoebe claims Denise is "
leaving town for a while
" so Rachel can now move in with her (how convenient). I believe that as soon as Phoebe found out Rachel needed a new place, she immediately kicked out Denise so that Rachel could move in with her (it's also the real reason she was so against Rachel moving in with Ross) and that (smoking hot) woman we saw Joey interviewing, was actually Denise looking for a new place.

What I always found dumb about Denise suddenly existing is that in TOW Joey's Big Break, which takes place just a few days before Monica tells Rachel Chandler is moving in, Phoebe says she likes to walk around naked because she lives alone. So apparently Phoebe got a roommate and then kicked her out in like 4 days.

My theory is that Phoebe made her up, along with about half of everything she ever talked about. I think Phoebe lived in a world of fantasy she intentionally created to make her life more interesting. Denise was real in Phoebe's mindjust not in the physical world.

I too believe that she made her up - it's not that long after her grandmother had died and she finally had the apartment to herself, so she probably wanted to enjoy that a little longer. I've always wondered why they never considered Ross moving in with her since he was still looking for a place at the time her grandma died. My guess is that she had enough of roommates for a while.
