Canadians aren't very easily offended we love to laugh at ourselves and play along with the American stereotypes of us, most of which aren't even true. But some of them are very true. What Canadian stereotypes did this movie get wrong or right?
-WRONG: Canadian accents. Nobody really talks the way Americans think we do unless we're putting it on just to mess with them.
Like Dan Aykroyd - he's Canadian but doesn't actually talk the way he does in the movie. Even Rick Moranis and Dave Thomas don't talk like Bob and Doug McKenzie in real life. True we do say some words differently than Americans, and OCCASIONALLY I hear someone say "about" kind of funny. But no-one really says "aboot." Oh the other hand, we DO say eh. A lot. Eh?
-RIGHT: We really are gosh-darn polite. That scene at the end when Bud was pushing the Canadians out of the way and they were saying, "Sorry. Pardon me. Excuse me!" We are actually like that. If someone bumps into us, we will sincerely apologize for standing in their way.
-WRONG: The jail scene. There's definitely crime in Canada. Just not with guns. A skilled Canadian can inflict more damage with a hockey stick than any type of firearm.
-RIGHT: The fight at the hockey rink. We as Canadians are pretty friendly and easy-going, but we all have our "berserk triggers." Usually it happens when someone insults our favourite hockey team, but we take pride in our beer too. Also, it's a common misconception that Canadian beer is stronger/more alcoholic than American beer. It's really about the same it just tastes better.
-WRONG: I have never, ever, EVER heard a Canadian call it the "Canadian National Tower." We say the CN Tower. In fact, most Canadians aren't even going to know what you mean when you say the former.
American: Oh you're from Canada. Have you ever been to the Canadian National Tower?
Canadian: Hmm, no I don't think so.
American: Really? I heard it was the tallest free-standing structure in the world.
Canadian: Oh, you mean the CN TOWER. Yeah, I work there.
-RIGHT: Winter eleven months of the year. Okay not really. But it certainly feels that way.
Can anyone think of any more?
