Forrest Gump reference by John Candy but wasn't released yet

Struck me immediately that John was dead before Forrest Gump came out (died March 4th, Gump released in July). I guess written after Gump was shot or improvised after he had seen it. Makes sense in movie terms since Bacon wasn't released until 1995 but still was eerie to hear.

I don't recall the exact context of Candy's Gump reference, but the original novel of "Forrest Gump" was out for a long time before the movie. Perhaps Candy read the book?

Copy / Paste from the trivia section:
In one scene, the characters played by John Candy, Bill Nunn and Kevin J. O'Connor sit around a campfire and discuss films in which black characters are killed before their white co-stars. O'Connor mentions Forrest Gump (1994), which was released six months after principal photography on "Bacon" was completed, and four months after Candy's death. The line was looped in after the scene was shot.
