I actually liked this film! I thought it was pretty cool!
The only down side to this movie is its effects, they are way too fake and cheap I mean come on they use tiny plastic figurines as people! It would have been a really good film if they tonned down the bad effects!
They should have left out the ending where the monster arrives, they should have scrapped that, didnt they even think that this looks terrible?!?

I think the effects work is quite good for a very low budget movie made in the mid 90's.

There are a few things that annoy me with this particular film. The first being that it starts out in Gatlin but then is taken out of the little town and thrown into Chicago. It's just so left field and out there! I would love for the films to stick with the whole Gatlin or Hemingford concepts.
The other quite laughable thing is the ending
when Eli transforms into He Who Walks Behind the Rows as the alien-like creature and is about to eat the girl. When it's close up you can plainly and I mean plainly see that it's a Barbie doll from the back and when it's a more wide shot she looks like a clay-mation figure. Those are two of the only things that really get me about this film.
Overall though, the effects were nice. There are a few cringe worthy scenes.
When young Eli sticks his tongue into his foster mother's ear. And when Malcom gets his head ripped from his body and you see his spine. Those are very like ewwwwww!
Janice Van Meter got hit with a baseball. . . it was fabulous!

This was one of my favorites because it actually did something different. Taking the demon worshiping cult out of the cornfield and introducing them into the real world was an interesting idea for my taste.
Also I don't think the creature Eli becomes was HWWBTR. That would imply that Eli was He himself, which he wasn't. A huge manifested demonic entity, sure. Undoubtedly. But, Issac wasn't He, either. Many of us believe it is Randall Flagg who is actually He.
One could argue that He often does show up and possesses a few of the kids through-out the series, but meh. I don't follow everything that closely. I think a few of the films are misinterpreted by writers or movie studios that didn't really get the character and just wanted a cheap, quick way of kicking off a horror film.

The effects were the best part about the movie!
                  The scarecrow was awesome.

I like the effects but it would've been just as good without them. Eli is plenty creepy enough on his own.
