Yeah exactly, I would have said "really, where did you beat me? I don't seem to be the one carrying my things in a card board box, have a nice life bitch face, enjoy the dole office loser!
Then I would have left and smugly grinned at or blew a raspberry at her.

I could never figure out most of that scene, it's maybe the worst victim of the severe cutting-down of the plot of the book. (I remember that "did it ever occur to you that maybe
        I
        set
        you
up" thing made perfect sense in the book, but it sure doesn't in the movie.)
I think in this case it's supposed to be an ironic use of "fair and square," like, she beat him through corporate back-stabbing and devious plots the way anybody would in this business, fair and square, ho ho.

She's COMPLAINING that she should've won, because she did everything right to trip Tom up.
The only reason he won was because he got a deus-ex-machine kind of help ("a friend") to not only figure out WTF was going on, but also an improbable shot at getting the info Meredith deleted.
I mean, no wonder she's dumbstruck and bitter about losing. She did everything right, and still lost.
And in the book is specified that she was actually following Garvin's orders (get a buyer, ANYWAY you can). So she should not be penalized for doing what she considered was the only way to close the deal.

How does screwing up the product get a buyer? Screwing up the product almost cost the merger.

Yes if i were Tom - id wait until i got the money from the spin off & then wham - I would be out that door so fast you wouldnt see me.
Why in gods earth would you stay at a company that is prepared to do this to you after all those years of service? Geez, loyalty is terrible there.

Her move was to pin the blame of the faulty product (which would be hidden until AFTER the merger) on Tom, thus with him fired, the problem would be gone as well.
Which meant Tom couldn't wait for the spinoff money. He was not intended to see a dime, for SOMEBODY had to take the fall for all that corner-cutting Meredith did.
Had he simply kept quite, he would get blamed and fired.
