So, what caused Vera to turn from the active, apparently healthy woman she was shown to be in the flashbacks to the half-crippled, largely bedridden woman later on? A stroke? Some kind of degenerative disease? I don't think the movie ever covered this, and I haven't read the novel.
Thanks in advance for any answers.

In the book it is explained that Vera had several episodes of strokes. That's why she lost control and couldn't move one side of her body

Don't be such a condescending jerk. There are many illnesses that could cause similar symptoms. Is a stroke the most likely scenario? Yes, but that doesn't mean you need to act like a jerk in answering the person. What are you, thirteen years old or something? Grow up.

I just think it was normal senility.

Vera was WAY older later on in the film than the flashbacks. In the flashbacks, she looked like a 50-60 year old milf. In the present day, she was probably 70-80.
