Vapid, contrived, manipulative, this film represents everything cheap and banal about post-Golden era Hollywood. Including the awful, vastly over-rated Hanks. Ugh.

No bashing here! I agree totally except that I think you are a little rough on Hanks. I hated this film immediately and have avoided it like the Plague. Sally Field has also become increasingly more annoying over the years. Poor Robert Osborne, having to sit down with her to discuss classic "essential" films on TCM; whose bright idea was that?

You need to elaborate this statement. This does not suffice. What exactly bothers you about the film? Can you name a single scene that was directed in a bad way? Can you name a single bad performance in here?
The movie was both incredibly emotional and incredibly satirical-comical at the same time (the Watergate reference was just unbelievable), and it had style. The music, the humor, the pathos, the cinematography, the historical satire, all the hints at the US history in those chaotic years It is petty to simply ignore all of this achieved here. -

I do not "ignore" what is there, I say the film does not possess these qualities.
And if you can say that the movie is "incredibly emotional," without actually elucidating on that, I can say it is insipidly manipulative.
Sorry. Just my opinion.
But I SEE Tom Hanks "ACTING!" in everything he does. He is a superficial and rather annoying actor. The story is trite and contrived, what can I say? I honestly believe and experience it that way. I wanted to like it, I really did. I don't. In fact, I detest it.
It is highly simplistic in all the elements you nane: that it builds itself around historical events, is cheap trick, that it uses music people know and love is a very cheap trick, it's "historical satire" as you generously put it, is juvenile and not worthy a High School level group discussion, the plot is artificial and very manipulative of the simple minded. Sorry.
It is an embarrassment to our culture that so many people think so highly of it. IMO. -

Your "criticisms" are not just complaints. You have taken them further than that.
Case in point, please see the below quotes taken from your comment(s):

Now, the definition of "pretentious" is as follows:
Attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Your comments on this thread are literally the definition of the word "pretentious".
Saying this film is an embarrassment to our culture implies that you are more cultured than anyone who likes this movie.
Implying that this film basically preys on the simple-minded is indicative of the fact that you believe you are always the smartest person in the room, and anyone with a differing opinion must be simple-minded.
To assume that your opinion is "the truth" is really the most pretentious thing that a person can say.
And yes, we are all a bunch of 12 year olds for disagreeing with you.

Well, there's a bunch. I notice that I've named mostly films from Hollywood's "Golden Age," as it is often referred to. Well, they were superior in many ways, but there are numerous films of the 60's through the 90's (though far less) that I rate very highly.
Have you learned anything? Does this give you any insight into anything? Did you find some pattern that you feel pigeon-holes me so you can shoot down my opinion regarding this tripe called "Forrest Gump"? -

Dunno; was curious, I guess. When a person hates a film that, oh I'd guess 8 out of every 10 people either like or love, its common interest to wonder what movies that person likes. I must say your list is impressive.

Yes, which is why I bothered to make this post! So many people LOVE this film! But so many people love Miley Cyrus, and rap music, too. I have my own theories. . . .
My list is sort of "can't miss," great films. I mean, you'd have to be totally brain dead not to appreciate these films. Others, not on the list, that I love, may not be so popular or thought of very highly. Like, "CARWASH"!! Can you imagine? -
