You must have missed the ever so emotional and - for the development of the characters aswell as the story - poignant "I may not be a smart man, but I know what love is."
Forrest might not know every little thing there is to know about the birds and the bees - and compared to the very experienced Jenny he was definately a novice. But he loves her and wants to spend the rest of his life with her. And he is also strong and fast, and could certainly object forcefully if something happened that he was not ok with.
