Lol, oh please. Just because someone doesn't like this movie doesn't make them a bad person. Retard.

You're all suckers, wooed by the big budget, Tom Hanks and quality soundtrack. This film was a reprehensible, subversive endorsement of conservative American values wrapped up in a box of chocolates. Truly an utterly despicable film that whitewashes history with sentimental sop. Wake up! (NOT a troll)

You either like it or you don't. You don't have to feel like you
          should
like it just because it's so popular though. I never understood why so many people have such an issue with this movie. Who cares if you didn't like it? Why is it so important to let everyone know that you're the odd one out and don't like it? Does it really mean that much to you?

For those who haven't watched it multiple times, try it and see if that doesn't change your mind. Shouldn't be hard to do, because it is very watchable (I think most agree).
While watching it again, you might see how everything fits together so well, and how there's always a little detail you didn't notice before. And everything's consistent in the Forrest Gump universe; that's hard to find in any movie. Watch it again and report back.

I just watched it and noticed how Forrest & Forrest Jr mirror each other's movements when they first meet in Jenny's apt. Cool scene. The movie is still captivating close to 120 minutes in!
That "He got a daddy named Forrest, too?" has to be the best paternity denial line ever!
              And then Hank's award-winning responsejaw-dropping.

Didn't the person who played Jenny also play Clare Underwood on House of Cards?

Forrest Gump is one of the best movies exactly because it is an endorsement of conservative values and upsets no good yankees like Stygian

I don't understand why it's considered one of the best movies
                        I do. It's because:

                        1. It starred Tom Hanks, who became Hollywood's biggest Golden Boy after starring in Philadelphia, and whose movie everyone thinks is pure gold just because he's in it
                        2. It crapped all over the Baby Boomers and their legacy during an era when Conservatism was making a huge comeback
                        3. It sent the simple-minded message that if you don't rock the boat and question the status quo, you'll live a charmed life, so it gave a lot of hope to underachieving losers.
                        4. Hanks went retard, and you can't go wrong if you play someone with a handicap. It's an instant win.

I watched that movie for the first time today.
Budget and actor(s) don't impress me from nowadays point of view.
Cinematography however is still top notch. Effects as well considering how old it is. But if budget and effects would make a good film then all Marvel movies would be 10s ^^
I simply got to love that movie for telling me that being dumb is all fine if other qualities make up for a little lack of intelligence.
However I think in that point the movie is fantasy. Still wonderful.
Lincoln Lee: I lost a partner.
Peter Bishop: I lost a universe!

"Forrest Gump" is popular I think because it portrays an imbecile as successful in everything he does: college football star, war hero, shrimp boat captain, long distance runner, etc. Viewers feel "If an imbecile like Forrest Gump can be successful then so can I!".

What do you mean by imbecile? Forrest understands morality , love , family , play , business, dedication , empathy , loss.

I agree with you, I think it's a good movie and was fun to watch it in the theater but I think it's way over rated. I don't get the love it receives either. I've only watched it one other time since seeing it when it was released, it doesn't speak to me telling me to come back to watch it over and over like other movies do. I feel the same way about E.T., while that is a good movie and I do like it I just don't love it. If I do watch E.T. it's for nostalgia purposes, maybe one day Gump will get to the point of me watching it for nostalgia once it ages more. Lol

Here's why I consider this is one of the greatest movies:
"I don't know if Mama's right or if its Lieutenant Dan, I don't know if we each have a destiny or if we're all floating around accidental, like on a breeze. But I think maybe its both, maybe both is happening at the same time."
I don't see a political message. I don't see a message of nostalgia, although I appreciate the trip through the humorous look at the history that happened during those years.
I see this movie and ponder if we each have a destiny or if we're all floating around like that feather. I see Forrest floating around like that feather touching so many destinies as he goes through life, and I understand that is about pondering our purpose in life, or if we really have one.
                                        JMHO.

I am with you, it's a 7 in my book, not bad but also nothing special. BUT I have a few guesses why it is so popular:

                                          • The effects where top notch for the time this was made
                                          • The soundtrack has many famous songs of the era the movie plays in
                                          • It contsantly includes (for the US) important events
                                          • It showcases many all-american virtues including christianity, GIs, football, self-made millionaires and so on
                                          • Lots of emotional scenes
So I guess it's irresistible for a slightly older american audience because of the involved nostalgia. But for me this doesn't add up that well, maybe because I am not from the US, I don't know. The story was kindof boring during the first half, seond was better but then the coincidences accumulated into a story that got more and more implausable. By the end I was waiting for a twist, something that explains he made everything up. But the movie just keeps his straight face. Forrest Gump, a guy that meets so many famous people by accident and does so many outrageous things like running for 3+ years and yet nobody recognizes him when waiting for a bus. The entire movie plays out like a fantasy which is why I expected a twist that never came.
So, while I achknowledge the cinematography, I just don't get whatever the movie tried to archieve. Still a 7 in my book, maybe 8 compared to the crap movie that we get these days, but 1995 alone had many movies that surpass Forrest Gump imho (Heat, 12 Monkeys, Se7en, Casino, The Usual Suspects, Toy Story all of which are lower ranked than Gump). But that's IMDb rating for you and Forrest Gump as the advantage that it's a movie "for the entire family" - no defined genre, a bit of everything, PG-13.
