I wasn't really crazy for Jenny overall.

You can say that yes Jenny used Forrest and all, and needed him to raise her son when she knew she was dying. But at the same time, she gave Forrest what HE WANTED, which was love and marriage to her. He was extremely happy raising little Forrest and taking care of Jenny on her last days, he truly loved her and Jenny even though a lot of her actions were selfish, as her last action gave Forrest what he had wanted his entire life.

I totally agree, you describe Jenny exactly like I see her.

In the book, Jenny didn't die (which is why its sequel wasn't made) and left him and Forrest Jr to join a folk band with two other guys.

I can sympathies with Jenny up to the point she slept with him and left. At that point she should have grew up enough to realize she was on a self destructive path and needed stability in her life. She admitted to loving Forest before sleeping with him. At that point she should have stayed.
The reason I don't like Jenny is that she doesn't come back until she gets an incurable disease and needs someone to take care of her kid.
There is even rumors the kid isn't even Forest's.

You took the time to write an extensive well thought out post deconstructing Jenny's life and qualities, so good post - thanks! And i'm happy to buy what you're selling, EXCEPT:
How is it in any way excusable for Jenny to keep Forrest's son from him for 5 years? He wasn't abusive or a drunk or druggie, incapable of looking after a child (especially with his wealth he could have afforded a plethora of help for visitation if that was ever an issue), children have a right to a relationship with both parents, he had a heart of gold, stability, security, etc. It's also not healthy for a child to suddenly have a bomb dropped on them at that age that they all of a sudden have a father, and here he is! (especially if it's avoidable).
Plus, she only got in touch with him after she knew she was going to die so it doesn't look like some kind of change of heart, only to keep her child provided for.
And if it wasn't his child, then that's even worse as 1. the obvious reason and 2. Forrest would have looked after him anyway because of his devotion to Jenny so the subterfuge would be unnecessary.
And this all happened after she supposedly cleaned up her act and was doing the right thing now.
