Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Interview with the Vampire: The Vampire Chronicles

    mariobros_91 — 9 years ago(September 29, 2016 06:49 PM)

This film was always meant to appeal female audiences with the presence of three of the most handsome actors in Hollywood playing vampires: Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and Antonio Banderas.
Just like females watch the Twilight Saga films due to the presence of Robert Pattinson as Edward, several female fans of Cruise, Pitt and Banderas are interested in watching IWTV exactly for these three actors.

Actually, the casting choices were hotly contested by fans and Anne Rice alike.
Tom Cruise was "too famous" to be Lestat. People didn't think the loose, casual kid from Risky Business could pull off being haughty and aristocratic Lestat de Lioncourt.
Antonio Banderas was Anne Rice's favorite actor, but the character he played was supposed to have been born to darkness as a teen, who stood out at the theater for being the only one who did not dye his curly, reddish brown hair black to match the rest of the vampires.
Brad Pitt was accused of being too flat with his acting.
While it may be true that "
      several
female fans of Cruise, Pitt and Banderas are interested in watching IWTV exactly for these three actors" that is not true of all women. As a female, MY reason for watching this movie was THE CHARACTERS and THE STORY. I wasn't crazy about Tom Cruise, didn't care for Brad Pitt before this film, and although Antonio Banderas was pretty, I wasn't going to sit through a two hour movie just because he was in it.
But I was captured by this universe, and the characters. All the actors did an excellent job of capturing their characters in this film. And you cannot overlook the fact that the dark blood heightens a vampire's beauty. So it makes sense, story wise, to cast beautiful people. For some people out there, the cast may have been a reason to see it once. But I seriously doubt you'll find it true of the fans on this board. Frankly, the whole idea that those three actor's looks is "THE" reason to watch this movie is more than a bit condescending.
Sincerely signed: a female who has never seen and doesn't give a crap about the Twilight films because she couldn't stand the books or the characters.
"You cannot understand. But before I died, Lestat was absolutely the most overwhelming experience I'd ever had."

Cruise and Pitt maybe but definitely not Banderas.
The reason to watch this movie is if you are a fan of vampires. Even with all the new changes goif on with that genre Anne has still created my favorite version of them.

Of those three actors, Antonio Banderas was the oldest one. Coincidentially, he played Armand, who considered himself the oldest vampire in Earth.
Cruise, Pitt and Banderas' ages at the time IWTV was released were as follows:
          Tom Cruise (Lestat): 32
          Brad Pitt (Louis): 30
          Antonio Banderas (Armand): 34

While that may be true to some extent initially, once you get passed that and into the depth or lack there of, of the story and then get into the books, which have all the depth, with those in mind with the exception of Banderas. You should easily be able to move past just the pretty in it and get to the meat of the stories, which is incredible.
As much as I love this film, it pales in comparison to the novel.
Twilight, well yes that is true because neither films nor books have any substance that Meyer did not steal from Rice and others.
Also to add I don't think they should ever be mentioned together in the same post if at all possible.

In terms of characters and plot, Pitt and Cruise are more important than Banderas. In my opinion, Banderas was miscast as Armand.
