This was UTTERLY AWFUL. I checked it out because I like Ephron's work and I totally regret having watched it.
It's the kind of movie that instantly puts you in a very bad mood, after realising not only have you wasted good money hiring it, but you've just lost a couple of hours of your life that you can never get back.
No redeeeming features whatsoever. It's not funny, romantic, plausible and the characters are fundamentally unlikeable.
Ditch this crap. -

Try to catch the original one instead. It's called "Le pre nol est une ordure" and if you understand french (I don't know if you can have it with english subs) you'll see that it's 10000 times funnier than this piece of crap!

I saw this movie when it first came out in theatres. I was a senior in high school and I recommended to a bunch of my buddies that we go see it since it had Steve Martin in it, so it had to be funny. Everyone was in agreement that this was one of the worst wastes of time we'd ever taken part in and to this day, I still catch slack for it.
Anytime a conversation about a movie comes up, it's a sure bet someone will say "Well, it's no Mixed Nuts, but" -

I'm at home watching it right now, for the first time. In my opinion, this thing tries hard, but is painfully unfunny. What's with Steve Martin's hair? It looks like the dye job is coming off. I did get a solid laugh from the great Madeline Kahn just now. She could make anything funny. What a loss.

Wow! Such hatred from every single poster!
I can hardly walk by this without saying I absolutely loved this movie! I thought the plot was funny, the actors were excellent and most of the scenes were brilliant!
I'd like to know why you guys all hated it so much, other than "it sucked". Anyone care to elaborate?

There were many blunders in it. However, Madeline Kahn is truly hilarious, Steve Martin is better than he is most of the time, and Liev Schreiber? Awe-some!
I just bought this on DVD the other night, it's something I'll watch for Christmas every year. I can understand why it isn't more popular, though.
Best part of the movie: the Christmas tree episode towards the end. Who agrees?

You must be too young MrsStevemurray, to remember Steve martin before his hair went all white, but that was how it looked back then without a dye job.

you people are absolutely crazy. This movie was hilarious. It had so many funny moments. Madeline Kahn was incredibly funny and i think the real star of the movie. Yes it was offbeat. Yes it was odd. And yes it was strange but thats what made it so funny. The only thing i would have changed was adam sandler. His role was horribly annoying and i fast forwarded whenever he went into his dumb songs. It would have been better without him.

This is the only film I ever heard of where someone asked for a refund and got it. Friend of mine went to see it when it came out and walked out after fifteen minutes. Got the refund, no argumentkid just said "Oh.yeah.that movie.ok."

Agreed. It's doubly disappointing to me because I saw it as a kid and thought it was absolutely hilarious. It was one of those movies I always meant to buy and always forgot to and I'm so glad I did. Madeline Kahn (RIP) is, of course hilarious but she could read a phone book out loud and I would pay gobs of money to see it. Liev Schreiber is pretty decent too but they can't save this movie. It's like watching a high school play.
