Archived from the IMDb Discussion Forums — Pulp Fiction

    SealedCargo — 3 years ago(July 08, 2022 07:32 AM)

compared to Reservoir and Jackie two movies that were tight and to-the-point, Pulp Fiction was the work of a director who had too much on his lap and was having too good a time to make on screen what's perfect on paper, turning a thriller into a zany comedy at times, like John Travolta and Eric Stoltz dropping Mia Wallace on the lawn when in fact HIS LIFE was on the line in that scene, built up from what MW had done to a guy who simply flirted with her… the Jack Rabbit scene before that was supposed to have Travolta NOT WANTING TO CONNECT with her at all for fear of what happened to the other guy, but they seem like they've known each other since high school in that scene… all show, no tension… then the pointless Kathy Griffin and Julia Sweeney "These were my buddies before I became famous" that Quentin threw in there, and worst yet, Mia drawing a square in the air, god that was bad, and would have no place in Jackie or Dogs or even Kill Bill for that matter, which was a fantasy film basically…
meanwhile the Bruce Willis scenes with his girlfriend were slow and torturous, trying for a French New Wave and seeming bland and pointless… Willis was WRONG for that part.. too bland… when he discovers his watch is back at home where he knows DANGER LURKS he simply walks back home like he's on a routine break from work…

Nope. It's literally a perfect movie. Nothing could improve it.

making it less of a comedy could and would have improved it

Some of the best scenes are the comedic ones. When Bruce Willis is picking out a weapon and keeps finding a better one. When they accidentally shoot the guy in the head in the car. The watch scene. The movie is comedic in a natural way, not in a jokey way. It's the best thing Tarantino has ever done. It's why he's a household name.

Technically maybe, but it had an undefinable magic that transcended everything else.

No, not technically maybe. It's one of the best movies ever made, if not the best. It's perfect. Stop it.
